When Getting Out of Bed Seems Impossible

Scripture Reading:
“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”— Matthew 11:28-30
There are seasons in life when getting out of bed feels like the hardest thing to do. Not because of illness or injury, but because discouragement weighs us down so heavily that we can’t see past our circumstances. Emotions cloud our vision, and before we realize it, we’ve lost sight of Jesus—our merciful and gracious Savior.
I recently walked through one of those valleys. In the same week, I lost a dear friend of 40 years to cancer while also caring for my daughter as she recovered from reconstructive jaw surgery. Grief, responsibility, and exhaustion pressed in so deeply that I found myself lying in bed, whispering through tears, “Jesus, please help me.”
At first, all I could manage were small steps—getting a drink of water, eating a piece of toast, returning to bed. But then I opened the Word of God, and His voice cut through the heaviness:
“I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst… The one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out.”— John 6:35, 37
In that moment, I was reminded: I am not alone. Jesus is carrying me, even when I can barely move forward. His Word anchored my weary heart, calmed my spirit, and gave me the strength to take the next step.
Friend, maybe you’ve been there too. Maybe you’re there right now. The good news is this: Jesus never asks us to carry our burdens alone. He invites us to bring them all to Him—our grief, our fears, our confusion, our exhaustion. He promises rest, not because the circumstances disappear, but because He carries the weight with us.
Reflection:
What burden are you carrying today that you need to give to Jesus?
How might opening His Word help anchor your heart when emotions feel overwhelming?
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for being gentle and kind to me when I feel weak, weary, and overwhelmed. Thank You for carrying me when I cannot take another step. Help me to trust You with all of my burdens and to rest in Your presence today. Amen.
